The Science of Scent or "The Nose Knows"


From the moment a human being enjoys (or finds displeasure in) their first breathed-in fragrance, the brain hard wires us to connect scent with surroundings, fragrance with what follows, and commands us to make associations with aromas. It's one of the first senses that's activated when we're born. It's in our DNA to connect the refreshing scent or citrus with the delicious taste of oranges or maybe even a slice of lemon meringue pie. Or the smell of baked apple pie might bring back treasured memories of your childhood. Perhaps the fragrance of fir trees or evergreens being back fond memories of Christmases past. Whatever your personal fragrance journey, every human is wired for smell and the triggers that go along with it.

Diane Ackerman, author of A Natural History of the Senses, explains it like this, "The charm of language is that, though it is human-made, it can on rare occasions capture emotions and sensations that aren’t. But the physiological links between the smell and language centers of the brain are pitifully weak. Not so the links between the smell and the memory centers, a route that carries us nimbly across time and distance."

Smell is provocative and deeply rooted to our emotional state.. It has an extremely significant influence on our behavior, perhaps even more than we realize. Certain fragrances have been shown to improve health, reduce stress, enhance sleep, and improve physical and cognitive performance. There is definitely a "mind-body connection" going on. Starting on December 17, 2016, there will be 42 bowl games played before the big Semi-Final playoff on January 9th, 2017. Teams from around the country will be scheduled to square off in a battle to hold their places on the roster and emerge the champion on the field of the modern day coliseum battles we like to call College Football.

The Truth About Cutting Boards

A Rainbow of Fragrance for your Ooh La Lamp


For centuries, human beings have relished the enjoyment of beautiful visuals combined with the fragrant scents that are found in nature. After all, what's more relaxing than taking a stroll through a garden and immersing yourself in all that mother nature offers? 

 Over the years, studies have been conducted to help explain the phenomenon of combining color and fragrance and the effect that can have on the mood of a person, or even a whole room full of people. In 2013, research was performed on groups of 122 test subjects gathered in conference rooms. Each group was surrounded with various combinations of fragrance and wall colors. Researchers took note of which combinations resulted in subjects relaxing and which caused them to be more energized. Given cognitive tasks, the subjects in conference rooms that were painted red or a warm color and surrounded by scents like peppermint performed their tasks more quickly and with more focus than those in rooms with cooler paint shades and sandalwood scents. 

 Most people are familiar with aromatherapy and color therapy. But, if you combine the two, you can turn a meditation room into a rumpus room pretty quickly!

Candles and All Hallows Eve


All Hallows Eve ... aka All Saints Eve, Allhalloween, or just plain "Halloween". Most of us have fond memories of holding out a bag and yelling the traditional "Trick or Treat" while sweet treats and goodies were added to our stash. However, this sacred day has deep roots in history and tradition which often includes candles in the observance.
People in many parts of the world attend church services on All Saints Eve and place lit candles on the graves of their dearly departed. In Ireland, as early as the 19th Century, candles would be lit and prayers formally offered for the souls of the dead. Also, in some areas of Ireland, England, and Austria, candles are burned in every room on All Hallows Eve to guide souls back to visit their earthly homes. You also might find candlelit processions on this day, leading to the grave sites of departed loved ones, where the family will spend the entire night burning candles to light the way for the soul of their departed loved one. In Finland, candles are placed with flowers at the head of gravestones in preparation for the many who come to light a candle for lost loved ones on All Saints Day.

Many observing Halloween traditions in Ireland carve a turnip rather than a pumpkin to represent their Jack-O-Lanterns.
