Milano Candles ... a Bowlful of Good Scents


This week, Celebrating Home Direct features the wonderfully fragrant, astoundingly robust Milano candle for our Weekly Focus. This rather impressive bowlful of good scents is named after the city of Milan, Italy, originally founded in 600 B.C. by the Gauls. This explains where the familiar phrase, "It takes a lot of Gauls to make a candle this extraordinarily great," originates.

Seriously, let's get down to the facts about the Milano candle from Celebrating Home Direct. There's a lot more to this complex candle than you might guess. I did a little sleuthing to get the scoop for you.
First, I found that I could smell the unlit candle from six feet away. That's some fragrance throw! It smelled delightful too! The Baked Apple Pie definitely got me thinking about the upcoming holidays.

The Beauty of Bamboo Cutting Boards


Every cook knows that a great cutting board can make prep time in the kitchen much more efficient. Once upon a time, plastic and hardwood cutting boards were the thing, but now there's something much better! 
Bamboo cutting boards were once very hard to come by. But, today, these wonderful boards are easily available and standard fare in most kitchens. And, in addition to being remarkably sturdy (16 percent stronger than Maple), using bamboo products is also good for the environment. Bamboo grows to a harvestable height in three to five years instead of decades, like hardwood trees. And, it can regrow without replanting. 
Because bamboo is so sturdy and durable it resists deep gouges better than hardwood and is much more sanitary to use. It's easier on your knives and utensils than hardwood or plastic. But, while it's sturdy, bamboo requires care just like any other tool in your kitchen.

Taking Care of Your Bamboo

Bamboo, like all things found in nature, is not indestructible. Here are a few tips for keeping your bamboo cutting board in top condition.
1) After each use, wash with warm soapy water. Then rinse and wipe dry
2) Store in a cool, dry place
3) Avoid exposure to extreme heat or dampness
4) Condition your bamboo cutting board by applying food grade mineral oil regularly with a soft, dry cloth to keep the board from drying out. The oil moisturizes the wood and helps to avoid splitting and drying out. It also results in a lovely, burnished look. When you first get your bamboo cutting board, repeat every day for about a week. Then, repeat once a month for best results.
To extend the life of your bamboo cutting board, do not place in your dishwasher or scrub with steel wool or abrasive cleansers.
If you use your cutting board to cut meat, consider getting an extra board to cut veggies and for other prep.
